not sure if this is any use

scaryred24 from TIZ posted this and I figured I could post it here and see if its anything important.
Developer on SEGA/Nokia SNAP:

The code was compiled using gcc on CentOS and cvs for source control. It

would be good if somebody at Nokia could give you the cvs repository.
Kosaka was probably working on Solaris.

I was directly involved in PS2 and ngage games, primarily the 2k sports
games (Visual Concepts) and a series of Capcom games (Resident Evil
Outbreak, Monster Hunter, etc). Also a bunch of games by RedLynx on the
ngage.

rUDP was in the version of the code I started with, so Kosaka wrote the
first version. File it under “those who do not understand TCP are forced
to reinvent it”

The bootstrap server was a load balancer/authentication server. It used
the same UDP transport as the KICS (game router) servers. The bootstrap
basically took a request, built a challenge reply containing where the
client should connect to KICS and encrypted it using blowfish and the
password as a shared secret. One wrinkle here is that each client got its
own UDP port on KICS — most people were used to game servers using a
particular port, SNAPcom didn’t do that.

63.251.242.131 according to legend was Kosaka’s desktop Sun workstation.
The ops people were extremely annoyed that he didn’t use DNS (rightfully
so). Getting around this may be a serious problem.

The differences between the games, at very least, is the game class id.
Multiple game class ids can be served by the same bootstrap/KICS.

SNAPcom also allowed game-specific servers to be written (for custom
matchmaking or persistence or…) and you’re unlikely to have any of that.

This basically proves what I found out about SN@P, too. Details will be posted on my blog in one of the next articles.

does this mean you found a way to get the US servers up.

Kind of... I recreated lobbies some time ago (maybe a year?) but starting or joining a game still isn't possible. Single player online is already possible.

Is there a decent incentive to bring the US servers up as well? Do you think it would bring it a lot more players? Wouldn't this just divide the community then?

I'm not trying to sound pessimistic, I'm just legitimately curious. I figured there is enough around here to play on the JP server if you really want to play online again.

Most of us share this concern. I believe fog does too which is why I don't think it's a priority of his.

I think it will put more in the community.Theres a lot of outbreak fans that cant or don't now how to get on the JP severs like most on this site.I feel if the US Servers can be done then go for it.Its not going to hurt anything you JP Server players do but add more people here.Which is a good ass thing.

IDK I feel that most people play on an emulator anyway so technical limitations wouldn't be an issue. However, saying a split in the community won't happen is wishful thinking.

Mhmm, to be honest, I don't think there will ever be a HD Outbreak from Capcom with online mode. But I wish so badly they prove me wrong...

sadly it looks like capcom erased all trace of it, as none of the links that were posted work anymore and even the google cache is gone for it :(

This was the actual server hardware- but wouldn't come with the software.

I'd love to give some recovery tools a chance to find leftover bits and bytes. Does anybody know about the whereabouts of this Harddisc?
